There are few foods I would sit through a football game for. There are few foods I would send my husband to the store to get in negative temperature weather.
Potato chips and potato chip dip equal life.
I know, it’s so low brow. But if I could only have one more dip in this life, it would be potato chip dip. I can’t deny it.
Unlike some others….
My friend, who shall remain nameless, enjoyed a chip or two. However, because this particular playoff game was enjoyed in the comfort of pajama pants, she denied the camera.
What You Need to Know About Chips and Dip
- According to Troyer Farms, Americans consume 1.2 billion pounds of potato chips every year.
- The Guinness Book of World Records says that Proctor & Gamble made the world’s biggest chip in 1991. It measured 25 by 14 inches.
- The “experts” behind Wikipedia claim that the original potato chip recipe was created in Saratoga Springs, New York on August 24, 1853.
- Various Internet resources state that we must celebrate National Chip and Dip Day on March 14.
- Gary Allen on Leite’s Culinaria says dip became popular in the 1950s, because of the growing popularity of the chip, Lipton’s successful marketing campaign for onion dip, and America’s fascination with eating in front of the TV. (If you’re interested in food history, you gotta check out this article on dip history.)
- Most potato chip dips have a sour cream base, but you don’t have to stop there. Yogurt, mayo, and cottage cheese could work, too. The real flavor of chip dip comes from the onions and the herbs/spices you choose.
- One ounce of Cape Cod kettle-cooked potato chips contains 6 grams of fat and 130 calories. Two tablespoons of Daisy sour cream contains 5 grams of fat and 60 calories.
Don’t be too scared of those calories, though. While you can’t eat chips and dip every day, you can indulge during football playoffs and the Super Bowl. Calories don’t count on Sunday!
Recipe for Classic Potato Chip Dip
*1 bunch green onions (whites only, minced)
*2 cloves garlic, minced
*1 tbsp. butter
*1 cup sour cream
*½ tsp. dill
*1 tsp. cayenne
*1 tsp. lemon juice
Directions: Sauté minced garlic and green onions in butter for five minutes. Once cool, combine all ingredients in mixing bowl. Mix until smooth.
Or…try the yogurt version
Use yogurt instead of sour cream. You may want to add a little bit of sour cream or mayo, so it’s not too runny. You may also want to add more lemon juice for flavor.

I love the thought of making homemade potato chip dip (I love the stuff but hate buying those overly processed cans!) Thank you for sharing yet another delicious and simple recipe. I hope you have a fabulous Friday and a relaxing weekend!
We all have our guilty pleasures in life. For me, it’s buffalo chicken dip. But I totally see the appeal in this!
@Monet – Over-processed dips can go away forever…at least as far as I’m concerned.
@Joanne – What is it about buffalo chicken dip? So darn good. Everybody loves it.
Isn’t it nice that men have come up with this wonderful excuse for us to indulge in all of these great foods. That dip sounds delicious!
Well call me low brow but that’s my favorite sin. Ruffles and my home made sour cream and chive dip. Love knowing that 3/24 is a day to celebrate.
@Kristen – Yes, I’d definitely be skinnier without a husband, but the chip dip is all me. He’s a salsa kind of guy.
@Lea Ann – You’re in good company. I’ve yet to make my own sour cream, but sounds like a worthwhile challenge.
I love potato chips…but when you pair it up with dip…it’s a force to be wreckoned with! They were definitely made for each other! YUM! (I like your thinking…on calories not counting on Sundays!)
YES! I am the same way, I would send my husband out in the dead of night for chips and dips! I LOVE them, if there is a party and there are chips and dip… it takes all I have to not take the whole thing of chips and dip for myself, go hide and munch munch munch!
so i made it!! with a bit of creativity.its really gd.10x
I’ve seen the World’s Biggest Chip. It’s at the Idaho Potato Museum (and yes, Idaho has a potato museum). It looked a little stale…
Ha! I bet.
Made the chip dip… would recommend have the cayenne as requested. We had to double everything else so it didn’t overwhelm the other flavors.
Steeler Dip Rocks!
1/2 tsp – piss
1/2 tsp – burgh
Truckload – Sucks
Go RAVENS!
