How to Make Honey Mustard Sauce

Honey mustard sauce was one of the first dipping sauces I learned to master. A friend and I created dozens of versions before finally settling on our favorite combination of sweet, tangy, and salty.

Honey mustard sauce deserves sweet potato fries.

Honey mustard sauce deserves fried chicken.

Honey mustard sauce deserves a Cobb salad. (You don’t have to eat a Cobb with vinaigrette. I say it’s ok.)

Honey Mustard Sauce Recipe

  1. I adore honey mustard sauce! Thank you for sharing this simple recipe with me tonight….I want to get into my kitchen now and dip! I hope you have a wonderful vacation. Hugs from Austin!

  2. Yummy! I want this drizzled on steamed asparagus. I should head to the store right now to make that happen.

  3. I love my honey mustard with nuggets too! I’ve never added mayo to mine but I think I should start. This looks so much richer than what I make. Thanks for the recipe.

  4. It is always nice to have recipes like this tucked away to make when needed. This is my first visit to your blog so I’ve taken some time to browse through your earlier entries. I’m so glad I did that. I really like the recipes you share with your readers and I’ll definitely be back. I hope you have a great day. Blessings…Mary

  5. This is such a simple sauce! It’s a fantastic recipe. I’ve prepared it twice for the day already!

  6. Thank you! I’m extraordinarily picky about hnoey mustard and I’ve never been able to find one I liked, this is -perfect-. No exaggeration. This is my ideal honey mustard.

  7. This sauce sounds really easy and amazing! If I dont use the Worcestershire sauce is there any substitute sauce I can use? But with the same quality?

    Thank You,
    Karen

    1. Hi Karen! You should be fine just leaving it out. It’s only a tiny bit of Worcestershire that I typically throw in. But, if you must, a little bit of salt might be good. Or a soy sauce could give you a nice twist.

  8. This recipe was great. Also it would go great with one tablespoon of tobasco hot sauce and if that is to hot then add a little more of the yellow mustard.

  9. hi, I want to make this sometime this week. I have all the ingredients, but the mayo. I have Miracle Whip. Do u think that will work just fine or should I make a trip to the grocery store to get some mayo?

    1. I think Miracle Whip can work…assuming you like the tang of MW. I say give it a shot and see what you think.

  10. I see asterisks in front of the ingredients, which usually mean there is a footnote, but I can’t find any footnotes. So can you please tell me what the asterisks mean? Thanks so much

    1. Hi Cathie. They don’t mean anything. I chose to use the * instead of a bullet, because I don’t always like the spacing with bullets. Sorry for the confusion. I’ll try to fix it.

      1. I thought the same thing as Cathie, i was looking for the footnotes. I love honey mustard and i never thought it was so simple to make. i am gonna make this soon. yummmy

  11. Tried making this, but was a bit to mayo-e for my liking. So I increased the mustard to a quarter cup, did two tps of worschestire sauce and added some black pepper…was a lot better for someone who likes a little tang to their honey mustard

  12. Honey mustard is one of my favorite dipping sauces for chicken nuggets, so when I cooked some up as a little snack for my b/f and I, I decided to look up a recipe for the sauce online. It was quick, easy, and we both loved it! My b/f said it tasted like it came from a restaurant!

    1. Could you make the sauce then dreadge chicken in it and then panko crumbs and bake it? The mayo is fine to bake isn’t it?

      1. Hi Dave – I have seen chicken recipes where you coat the chicken in mayo before baking. I have not done it, though, so I can’t give you any tips. I say give it a try and see what happens. Let us know!

  13. About 3 years ago i bough a “salad dressing” that tasted just like this and never found it again….

Thanks for making it so simple and inexpensive!!!

  14. I grew up making baked chicken with a glaze containing mustard, ketchup, and brown sugar. Tonight I baked chicken tenders not realizing we were out of Honey mustard. So I tried to make honey mustard with just the brown sugar and mustard but it was TOO thick! Then I googled how to make honey mustard and found your recipe. I just added it to the brown sugar mix and my boys love it! Thank you for the quick fix. Its sweet and delicious!

  15. I just used the last of my leftover honey mustard from the restaurant because i’ve been putting it on everything. Fried fish, hot dogs, etc…. So, i was in need of a good recipe. I googled it and came to your site. It looks identicle to what i’ve been using and from what i’ve been reading it’s going to taste as good. THANK YOU . I’m going to make some RIGHT NOW. This is my first time to your site so i’m going to look around to see what other good things you have.

    Blessings. To you life saver
